Independent medico-legal opinions and technical assessments for overseas law firms, insurers and parties involved in Italian disputes.

Independent technical practice
Dr Valeria Liguori provides medico-legal consulting in matters requiring examination of medical records, analysis of causation, assessment of impairment and disability, or an expert appraisal of the medical consequences of an alleged event. Each technical instruction is assessed on its specific evidence and scope.

For lawyers and insurers
An overseas law firm, claims professional or insurer may seek a targeted opinion on questions of medical causation, the nature and extent of injury, consistency of records or the medico-legal implications of a particular medical event under the applicable framework.

Separation from legal representation
A medico-legal opinion is a distinct professional service. It may support a case handled by independent lawyers, including lawyers appointed by the same client elsewhere. No legal representation is implied by a technical instruction.

Documentation and confidentiality
Please begin with a non-confidential overview of the issue and the question for the expert. Detailed clinical records should be transmitted through an appropriate channel agreed after the initial contact.

Targeted expert evidence for referring counsel and insurers
Medical liability files. A clearly framed instruction may concern the consistency of clinical records, a disputed injury mechanism, causation, the sequence of treatment or the medico-legal significance of a documented complication. An expert opinion identifies the evidence reviewed and the limits imposed by missing records.
Personal injury and serious impairment. Technical evaluation may concern the nature and evolution of injuries, residual functional limitations, temporary impairment, permanent consequences or the need for assistance, subject to the applicable assessment criteria and medical documentation.
Disability or insurance-related disputes. Foreign claims teams may need an Italian medico-legal assessment or an independent review of an existing report. The remit and professional standing of the expert should be agreed separately from any instruction to Italian legal counsel; independence is not compromised by the existence of a referral.
Preparing the instruction. State the technical questions, disputed facts, relevant dates, requested form of report and available record categories. Avoid sending identifiable patient data or medical files until a secure transfer route and lawful basis for processing have been agreed.
